Magnetic Therapy – Scientific Research Evidence

Continuing from the previous post on Magnetic Therapy For Sciatic Pain Relief, this post discusses some more scientific research data supporting the effectiveness of magnetic therapy treatment.

In 1992, Foley-Nolan used pulsed magnetic therapy fields in treatment of acute whiplash syndrome in a randomized double blinded controlled study.

Acute whiplash affects the muscles below the chin and above the sternum when an accident causes a person to be struck from behind and the head is thrown forward and then pulled back due to the impact. Whiplash can occur due to a variety of reasons, the most common being involved in a motor vehicle accident.

Twenty patients wore active pulsed magnetic therapy collars and twenty others wore placebo collars for 8 hours per day. The group wearing active collars showed statistically significant improved visual analogue at 2 and 4 weeks in comparison with the placebo group.

In another statistically significant study in 1998, Pujo selected a group of 30 patients and treated them at random with real or false magnetic current coil stimulation over body areas that were tender.

Those treated with real stimulation reported a decrease of post procedure pain by 59% while only 14% did so from the false treatment group.

Magnetic Therapy Research On Sciatic Nerve

This study using pulsed magnetic therapy fields was conducted on rats with experimentally severed sciatic nerves to increase their peripheral nerve regeneration.

Magnetic Therapy For Sciatic Pain Relief

We have seen in previous posts the definition of sciatica and the causes of sciatica. Sciatica can heal of its own accord but it takes time and complete rest which is especially hard in the modern day world.

Magnetic therapy has helped in accelerating the pain relief from sciatica by use of powerful static magnetic fields emanating from static magnets scientifically engineered and strategically positioned in magnetic mattress pads and magnetic mattress toppers.

Generally the body is most receptive to healing in the sleep state. Lying on a magnetic mattress pad or magnetic mattress topper at night exposes the lumbar or lower back region to powerful static magnetic fields with the affected region in close proximity to such fields.

The improved blood circulation in the lower back regions helps reduce the inflammation in the sciatic root nerve and provides drug free sciatic pain relief without any harmful side effects and saves one the hassles of going through invasive surgical procedures.

The only restraints when using magnetic mattress products are for women who are pregnant and people who are fitted with pacemakers. These people should seek alternative treatments for sciatic pain relief.

Scientific Research Data On Magnetic Therapy

Scientific research through randomized double blinded and placebo controlled trials have been conducted on the efficacy of magnetic therapy as an alternative treatment for alleviation of pain.

Magnetic therapy has shown promise in treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee and spine as evinced by Miner and Markoll in 1993.

Trock in 1994 studied 86 subjects with knee osteoarthritis and 81 people with cervical spondylosis in a random double blinded placebo controlled trial. Spondylosis is a degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the spinal vertebrae and neural forminae causing compression of the nerve root by the reduction in space between two adjacent vertebrae.

If vertebrae of the neck is affected, it gives rise to cervical spondylosis. If it involves the lower back, lumbar spondylosis arises.

Trock treated the group with pulseed magnetic fields with the net result being significant changes from the baseline after a one month period. The placebo group did not reflect any changes.

We will discuss some more scientific research data from magnetic therapy treatment in a forthcoming post.

Magnetic therapy products from Woolrest BioMag in the form of magnetic mattress pads and magnetic mattress toppers have provided many users with alleviation of body pain through non-invasive static magnetic fields.

Other Sciatica Causes

Continuing from the previous post on causes of sciatica, we discuss a few more possibilities of sciatic pain.

Accidents are unfortunate in that they can leave indelible physical and mental scars in a person depending on the intensity. The trauma undergone in such incidents can affect one both physically and mentally.

When a car crash or a collision playing sport impacts the root of the sacral spinal nerve, it can lead to compression of the nerve root or even bits of broken bones can compress the nerve. This leads to sciatica.

Spinal Tumors

A spinal tumor is a cancerous growth that is either malignant or benign that develops near the spinal cord or in the bones of the spine.

Spinal tumor can impinge on the lumbar root nerves compress them with risk of causing sciatica. Spinal tumors can also lead to weakening of the spine and decreased sensitivity in the buttocks.

During pregnancy, sometimes the uterus can press on the sciatic nerve. Another reason is due to the carrying the extra weight of the fetus causing compression of the vertebral nerves causing sciatica.

Sciatica Caused By Human Habits

In today’s fast paced age, the work habits of people tend to afflict them with sciatica. Standing hours on end day in and day out at work, sitting on a wallet etc are possible examples of self inflicted sciatica.

Tradespeople carry toolbelts around their hips at work. Over a prolonged period of time, this practice can shift the alignment of the sacral vertebrae.

In the next post, we will look at the treatment of sciatica using magnetic therapy. Users of Woolrest BioMag magnetic therapy products have over the years reported great alleviation of sciatic pain and gaining drug free pain relief in the process.

Static magnetic fields can play a vital part in reducing the lumbar pain when the body is exposed while lying on magnetic mattress pads or magnetic mattress toppers.

Causes Of Sciatica

Sciatica arises generally from irritation of one of the five sets of nerve roots of the lumbar or lower back or the compression of the sciatic nerve. This is called radiculopathy.

If the nerve problem arises due to a spinal disk bulge, it is called spinal disc herniation. If it is due to the enlargement or misalignment of the vertebrae, it becomes spondylolisthesis.

We will restrict this discussion to sciatica caused by lower back or lumbar radiculopathy.

Possible Sciatica Causes

Spinal Disc Herniation

Spinal disc herniation is one of the possible causes of sciatica. The center of the spinal discs are gel like substance called nucleus pulposis which is encased within tough ring of cartilage called annulus fibrosus.

Herniation of a disc happens when the gel like center breaks through the outer cartilaginous ring intruding into the spinal canal. This leas to compression of the nerve root causing sciatica.

To compound to the problem, the disc inherenty contains hyaluronic acid, a chemical irritant that causes inflammation of the nerve. These factors cause inflammation along with numbness, weakness of the muscle and tingling sensation.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

The nerves from the spinal cord runs through passages of bone and ligaments called foramina . When there is a narrowing of these passages, it compresses the nerve roots that extend past the spinal column into the lower parts of the body. This nerve compression causes sciatica.

Piriformis Syndrome

The Piriformis muscle is found in the lower spinal region. It is connected to the thigh bone and helps in the hip movement. The sciatic nerve runs below the piriformis muscle.

But in about 15% of the general population, the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle than below it. This leads to a condition called the piriformis syndrome where the muscles in the piriformis spasm causing compression of the sciatic nerve.

In layman terms, it is called Wallet Sciatica as men in particular sit with a wallet in the rear pocket which compresses the muscles of the buttocks and the sciatic nerve.

This is a condition in which a vertebra (or bone) in the lower spinal column is displaced from its proper position on to the bone below it. The spinal nerve root is compressed and causes sciatic leg pain.

This can happen due to birth defects or sudden injury. In adults, degenrative disease like arthritis causes the slip between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae.

A person suffering from spondylolisthesis experiences throbbing pain in the lower back with occasional shooting pain starting at the buttock and into the back of the thigh. Tingling and numbness sensations are also felt.

More causes of sciatica will be discussed in the following blog posts.

Users of Woolrest BioMag magnetic therapy have reported alleviation of sciatic pain by sleeping on magnetic mattress pads and toppers during the course of a good night’s sleep with the lower body exposed to powerful static magnetic fields.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a painful condition that arises from irritation of one of the five spinal nerve roots that form each sciatic nerve. It can also be caused by the compression of the left or right sciatic nerves or even both at the same time. The medical term for sciatica is sciatic neuritis.

Sciatic pain is experienced in the lower back, buttocks and different areas of the leg and foot. Apart from moderate to severe pain, other symptoms include tingling in the leg, pins and needles, weakness of muscle numbness and sometimes loss of motor control of the leg.

These appear typically on one side of the body. Sciatica commonly occurs in the lower back and leg at varying degrees of pain. Sciatica is more a group of symptoms than sheer analysis of the pain caused by the irritation of the nerve root.

Sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body running from the pelvis through the hip down the buttocks and into each leg. It is vital nerve that controls the movement of most muscles in the lower part of the body in the thighs, legs and feet areas.

This should make one aware that sciatic treatment can vary from person to person depending on the cause of the symptoms and the causes can be manifold.

The most common sciatic pain that is felt is from the lower spine down the buttock and ito the back of the thigh. But the pain can range over all areas of the lower half of the body.

Causes Of Sciatica

Sciatica can be caused by a variety of factors such as spinal disc herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, trigger points in lower back, pregnancy and even work related habits.

We will see in detail in following posts about the different causes of sciatica.
