Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) are very effective in providing fibromyalgia pain relief. Improved quality of sleep is a beneficial outcome of this treatment that alleviates the pain arising from fibromyalgia. We have already discussed the effects of magnetic therapy for fibromyalgia pain relief using static magnets.

Low tissue oxygen major cause of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is often associated with low tissue oxygen. The electron transport chain in the human body transfers protons between an electron donor and an electron acceptor resulting in chemical energy generated in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In mitochondrial electron transport chain, it is the conversion of oxygen to water.

Viewed in this light, the low tissue oxygen is largely due to oxygen metabolism inefficiency in the mitochondrial electron transport chain and results in the oxygen supply being drawn too quickly leaving behind a disproportionately large amount of oxidative waste like carbon di oxide and other waste gases.

Pulsed magnetic therapy for fibromyalgia pain relief

Pulsed magnetic therapy has been put to use effectively for over three decades in providing fibromyalgia pain relief. It is an effective alternative therapy with absolutely no side effects giving great results.

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) coupled with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is believed to be an effective therapy for providing a long term solution to fibromyalgia pain relief.

Pulsed magnetic therapy treatment characteristics

The research and treatment results of use of pulsed magnetic therapy in Easter Europe clearly indicate that the singular most important treatment characteristic is the frequency of pulsed magnetic fields.

The frequency specificity of pulsed magnetic therapy treatment applicator that is the key to alleviation of fibromyalgia pain. A particular frequency or specific range of frequencies used in treatment can make a huge difference.

Very weak near earth amplitude electromagnetic signals at specific range of frequencies have been known to cause REM sleep state in sufferers. A good quality sleep coupled with good nutrition is the key to counter the painful effects of fibromyalgia.

We saw in the previous post titled Fibromyalgia and Magnetic Therapy the causes and symptoms of fibromyalgia. We will now discuss the effect of magnetic therapy treatment for providing fibromyalgia pain relief.

There are a few important factors that are required to counter the effects of fibromyalgia – improved sleep, good nutrition and regular exercise.

The treatment for fibromyalgia comes down to the individual. Since the symptoms of fibromyalgia vaccillate between peaks and troughs, the treatment approach has to be styled according to the needs of the patient in question.

Magnetic therapy using static magnetic fields or pulsed magnetic fields can be applied on the affected person while varying the magnetic field characteristics during treatment.

Magnetic therapy for fibromyalgia pain relief

Magnetic therapy has the unique effect of restoring a body to its balanced energy state at the cellular and physiological level. In the case of alleviation of pain caused by fibromyalgia, mangetic therapy effects some beneficial changes as follows:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Strengthening of the immune system
  • Improved flow of cellular nutrients and cell metabolism
  • Improved nerve function
  • Better quality of sleep
  • Stress reduction

Magnetic field characteristics in treating fibromyalgia

The subtle balancing nature of magnetic therapy is that it restores the body to a balanced energy state viewing the body in the perspective of an  energy field.

Magnetic therapy can activate different balancing actions simultaneously. Since every body is in a disturbed energy state due to various factors including electrosmog, exposure to magnetic fields can cause the tuning of the body based on its needs at that point of time. There is no specific way of tuning a particular aspect of the energy field.

The magnetic therapy treatment depends on some key factors such as the types of frequencies of the magnetic fields, the strength of the magnetic field, the duration of exposure to magnetic field treatment, the size of the magnetic field and the frequency of use of magnetic therapy.

In the particular instance of fibromyalgia, some of the recommended modalities of treatment would be full length exposures of the body, daily use and use of extremely low frequencies (ELF).

Use of static magnets

Magnetic mattress pads with healing static magnets are ideal in treating fibromyalgia as it exposes the entire body to powerful static magnetic fields during the course of a night’s sleep. They act on tender points and other trigger points that cause the most pain in the case of fibromyalgia.

Sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad helps in alleviating pain felt acutely at tender points. They can include the back of the head, the neck, shoulders, elbows, ribs, hips and knees. Moreover, an 8 hour stretch of sleep ensures that the body is not exposed continuously to magnetic fields.

Static magnets work well in tandem with pulsed magnetic fields in the treatment of fibromyalgia. In case there is a pacemaker fitted in a sufferer’s body, it is forbidden to use static magnets.

Case study for magnetic therapy treatment of fibromyalgia

A study by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine for the treatment of fibromyalgia pain using magnetic therapy showed some interesting results.

Researchers at University of Virginia studied 94 patients suffering from fibromylagia and divided them randomly into 4 groups. About 50% of these sufferers were part of two control groups of which one group received their usual fibromyalgia treatment and another group that had fake magnets.

The other two groups used genuine magnetic mattress pads. One of these groups had their bodies exposed to uniform magnetic fields. The other group used magnetic mattress pads was exposed to magnetic fields that varied spatially and also in polarity.

After six months of study, researchers found that the two control groups that slept on magnetic mattress pads with genuine magnets showed a clear improvement in terms of the alleviation of intensity of pain in the number of tender points in the body. But the patients in this group did not show the same kind of improvement in their fibromyalgia symptoms.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that causes pain in  muscles and connective tissues and affects the musculoskeletal system in general. There are other problems along with this pain collectively referred to as the fibromyalgia syndrome that include sleep disorders, tiredness and mood swings.

Fibromyalgia can also be accompanied by post traumatic stress disorder and psychological problems like anxiety and depression to name a few. Not all affected patients undergo all these symptoms. It varies from one individual to another. Women have a higher probability of developing fibromyalgia than men.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia causes a dull throbbing pain particularly in the muscles. The pain can either be felt on one side of the body or it can be widespread if it occurs on both sides of the body.

There are points in the body where pain can be felt when pressure is applied. Such points are called tender points and some of the tender points affected by fibromyalgia are the areas between the shoulder blades, front part of the neck, sides of the hips, outer elbows, inner knees and back part of the head.

Fibromyalgia sufferers often experience fatigue due to the pain preventing them from gaining a good night’s sleep. Other sleep problems like restless legs tend to compound the condition.

Causes of fibromyalgia

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not known though there are a combination of factors leading to this disorder. Some of them are explained below.

Genetic factors

If there is a higher incidence of fibromyalgia in the family line, then genetics can be a crucial factor in occurrence of fibromyalgia.

Stress

Stress can be a contributing factor in the development of fibromyalgia. Some of the secondary disorders underlying fibromyalgia are stress related such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Dopamine dysfunction

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter produced by the brain. It plays a vital role in the central nervous system and is connected to the motivation and reward tendencies of the brain. Dopamine is also closely associated with restless legs syndrome which is found in patients affected by fibromyalgia.

Psychological factors

Depression often accompanies fibromyalgia showing the existence of a relationship between fibromyalgia and major depressive disorders (MDD) thus affecting the way the brain processes feelings of pain and unpleasantness.

Physical trauma

Accidents, post surgery condition, onset of infections and other stress related problems often can lead to fibromyalgia symptoms.
