In a double blind study involving 67 patients, the effects of application of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) was studied. Neither the patients nor the researchers knew who was receiving the real treatment and who was receiving false treatment.

After two weeks, half of the group receiving rTMS treatment showed at least 50% improvement in alleviation of depression. A quarter of those in the false treatment group showed the same improvement.

The best result was that more than half of the real treatment group did not need further electroconvulsive treatment (ECT). Those receiving the false treatment had to further undergo ECT.

“Our findings are very exciting, since they provide clear evidence for the effectiveness of rTMS, at least over the short term,” explained Dr. Ehud Klein of the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion and head of the Department of Psychiatry at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
